Global electric vehicle sales are on the rise. As more people go electric, EV charging at work is becoming a sought-after perk of savvy, early adopters of electric vehicles. And as a greater portion of the workforce strongly values sustainably-minded organizations, companies have much to gain by offering employees EV charging. Read on to find out why both employees and organizations win from having EV charging in the workplace.
Why Employees Value EV Charging at Work
With unstable gas prices and environmental concerns, drivers are switching to EVs as a convenient way to reduce driving costs and their carbon footprint. Since work is the second-most place where drivers charge up (home is the first), offering EV charging is a major employee incentive. Some of the benefits include peace of mind against range anxiety, the ability to drive further, greater flexibility to accommodate unexpected schedule changes and more. This all translates into lower stress levels for employees.
Millennials: The Majority of the Workforce
Millennials (those born between 1981 and 1996) now make up the majority of the workforce in both Canada and the US. They come with strong views on the environment and social responsibility. 76% of millennials consider a company’s social and environmental commitments when considering employment. Three of every four millennials would take a pay cut to work for a more responsible company. The bottom line? Today’s talent wants to work with companies who are socially responsible and who care about making a positive difference in the world.
Good for Organizations, Too
EV charging at work isn’t just an employee perk – it has a lot of significant incentives for companies as well. First of all, it positions companies as innovative and cutting-edge. It also helps organizations reach sustainability targets. Additionally, it helps attract top talent (as EV drivers tend to be more educated, according to literature), increases employee satisfaction and encourages EV adoption among employees.
Bell Canada’s EV Charging Program
As one of Canada’s Top 100 Employers, Bell Canada strongly values employee retention and satisfaction. “Employees are looking for innovative businesses that they want to work with. We consider the installation of these charging stations fits within Bells’ innovative and sustainable development values,” says Marc Duchesne, Vice-President of Corporate Security and Responsibility.
The company installed a network of FLO EV charging stations for their employees at several Bell locations. “We needed to serve our employees. As the presence of charging stations becomes more and more mainstream, we thought it was important for Bell to be part of that.”
Bell has seen great success with its EV charging program. Since installing the charging stations, the number of employees driving electric vehicles has quadrupled. “Employees are very happy to have the opportunity to charge their cars during the time that they work,” says Duchesne.
EV charging at Cascades
Sustainability and social responsibility are central to Cascades’ business model. In fact, the company has been named the Most Responsible Brand and Organization for the seventh consecutive years by the Responsible Consumption Observatory’s Barometer of Responsible Consumption (Baromètre de la consommation responsable).
Cascades also values employee satisfaction, as shown by the average employee tenure of 12 years. So, when an employee requested EV charging, the company went to work strategizing on how to meet the employee’s request, which would also help meet their sustainability goals.
Cascades’ EV program saw immediate results with employees. Before the program launched, they had two employees who drove EVs. That number grew to 20 in just two months and continues to increase. Additionally, Cascades received extensive media coverage for their workplace charging initiative, demonstrating their position as a sustainable leader.
